OCD, the annoying habits that won't go away

Last post, I talked about depersonalization, which is a disorder that makes one feel detached from reality, and also from one's own self. Now, I'll talk about OCD. And, yep, people who suffer from some dissociative disorder usually suffer from a set of mood/humor disorders as well. Not everyone, but some of us are "cursed" with having to bear with a few of them.

Once again, since I've just started the blog, I'm going to tell you about my own experiences and episodes. Later, I'll write posts with info on causes (if doctors know, really, of any), possible treatment, etc. So, here we go.

The earliest memory of OCD I can recover from my mind begins early in my childhood. I had never heard of OCD then, just coming to hear about it in my mid-twenties. But, as a child, I had this annoying habit of separating things on my plate when I ate. My family got crazy at me, at first, then they just started to find it amusing, telling everyone who saw me eat "oh, see there, Daniel does that all the time", and just laughed about it. I didn't join in the laughter, of course. I was not having fun with deparating things on my plate.

Depersonalization, an annoying relationship with reality

Suddenly, you look around and you feel something is not right. Things feel strange. You look at your hand, your arms, your legs...you know they are hands, arms, and legs...but, what does it mean?! Whose are they?! You look at the mirror...who is this person staring at you?! You know that's you, but it doesn't mean much. You feel a stranger within your own skin. It feels like you are there, but not really there. You are aware of the world, but not of yourself, or of what it means this "self".

Depersonalization can be a most annoying disorder. It makes one feel detached from one's own self. It feels as if you were looking at the world from above, and your body is down there, standing on the ground, but your mind is high up there, just aware of things, but not able to feel, to recognize things and associate meaning to the environment. And, the most you feel that way, the most anxious you get, and the most depersonalized you feel. But, I'm not getting into too much detail here, on this post, since there's quite a lot to read from the web (links are listed further down on this post), with pretty much useful info on what it is, its possible causes, treatments, and so on.

Why this blog exists

"Why this blog exists?" (text imported from an old blog of mine, now deleted, the Robot-like Mind), you might be asking yourself. Well, the idea of making this blog came right after watching a pretty interesting movie called "Numb", with Matthew Perry in it. The movie shows a man who suffers from depersonalization (more info, here), and desperately attempts to find a cure, especially when he meets the woman who he believes is the love of his life.

I can say I related to the movie pretty much, having suffered from occasional depersonalization episodes myself for the past decade or so. Not only depersonalization, but other humor/mood and dissociative disorders, here and then. Quite to be expected, since most anxiety/depression-based disorders come in sets.

I've written about other such disorders before, but after the above-mentioned movie, I felt like I should have a blog about all those things I've been studying so much about, and that so many people out there suffer from, too, and sometimes don't know where to look for support.

As for me, I can certainly say I got my share of such disorders. None of them at any severe degree, I believe (and hope), but quite a few of them, which can become pretty annoying at times. Each person may have a different experience of such illnesses, with varying symptom intensities and frequency of episodes. My particular symptoms, and disorders, for instance, are not usually severe, nor neverendingly constant, but they come pretty often, one at a time, or some at a time. OCD, depersonalization episodes, sudden mood changes, existential depression (specially the type suffered by gifted individuals), chronic anxiety, and so forth.

The reasons for a person to suffer from any of these, and/or other disorders, may vary greatly, or usually come from a combination of factors. Psychological trauma, genetic predisposition, upbringing, etc.

Anyway, that's why I started this blog, and intend to post useful information about the subject, as well as to post personal experiences on this matter. Welcome!

O Castor e o desânimo crônico

Castor?! Você talvez esteja se perguntando. Sim, o Castor.
