The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

The Adjustment Bureau (2011) is quite an interesting movie with Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Terence Stamp. A mix of romance, sci-fi, and thriller, it is also a (sort of) philosophical movie that tries to ponder on subjects such as free-will and fate.

David Norris (Damon) is running for US Senate, when he suddenly meets beautiful Elise (Blunt) in the men's bathroom. It's love at first sight! Though, some forces beyond their understanding are working to keep them apart. But, will those forces be strong enough against true love?! Will David succeed in finding Elise and dating her?!

Well, in a very peculiar way, the movie tries to debate the issue of fate against free-will, the divine design against human right to choice. And, the peculiar way is that the legion of "design keepers", the ones working to enforce the divine design, look pretty much like an FBI task force from the 60's. But, I believe this was just an effort to make the movie more understandable to the general audience, make it more interesting, less cliché...anyway...

Not a masterpiece, though very enjoyable and thought-provoking! After all, if fate exists, is there any room for free-will?! And, if free-will has power, can there be a fate, or God's design?! That's what the movie tries to discuss. It tries to show that God attempts, as much as possible, to give mankind some freedom of choice, though we always end up screwing things up. We are given free-will, and that makes God's plans change all the time.

I'm not religious, nor do I have any particular faith...but, I like movies that make us think, no matter what the subject of its thinking object may be. I recommend this movie, which besides thought-provoking, is also good fun, with plenty of action scenes, and some romance.
