Before Sunrise (1995) is one of my favorite movies of all times! I remember watching it for the first time when I was around 16 years of age (back in 1996, or so), and it was “love at first watch”!!! For some “unknown” reason, it appealed pretty much to me! Backpacking in Europe, train rides, finding the possibility of love during such a trip…really something tempting!
Jesse is an American guy who’s travelling around Europe, after being dumped by his girlfriend, who was studying in Spain. Travelling without any specific destination around Europe now, he then meets Celine, a French girl who had been visiting her grandma in another country in Europe. After some talking in the train’s café, Jesse makes a proposition to Celine: she’d get off the train with him, to visit the city, since he has to leave to the U.S. the next morning, and has no money for a hotel. She decides to take the risk, and accepts it…
So, they are two strangers in Vienna, walking around the city, visiting places, and getting to know each other, while slowly falling in love…
The movie may appeal to me so much due to some peculiar characteristics…the acting is great, and so natural; the images of the city of Vienna are so beautiful; the dialogues are great, intelligent, they talk about a great variety of topics people talk about when they’re getting to know each other, and they’re smart; it shows two people slowly falling in love, though they’ll have just a few hours to be together, and we don’t know what’s gonna happen to them.
I don’t know how to describe it, but the movie causes strong emotions and feelings within me. Their conversations are great, and quite intelligent. That grabs my attention! They go from reincarnation to the never-ending male vs female struggle, from past relationships to the analysis of the possibility of fate.
Also, and recalling the style of Sophia Coppola in Lost in Tranalation (2005), which is another of my favorite’s of all times, the photography is beautiful, and quite intimate, showing the details of the emotions on the characters faces. It’s a movie about love, about getting to know another person, about beauty, and about youth.
I really recommend it! Also, the movie’s got a great rating on IMDB (an incredible 8.1 there, which is quite hard to get). I’d personally rate it a 10, but would rate it even higher, if possible…
